‘Gentleman Observer,' is an exploration of psychological variants of modern masculinity through the complex and varied experiences of men, exploring the identity and psychology of the modern male and how he observes and is observed.
‘Gentleman Observer’ stems from the idea that men are often positioned as detached observers, disconnected from their emotions and inner experiences. Masculinity in today's society is a complex and evolving concept. In the past, masculinity was often associated with traditional gender roles, such as being the primary breadwinner and protector of the family, while being emotionally distant and stoic. However, these traditional expectations have been challenged, leading to a shift in societal norms and attitudes towards masculinity. Nowadays, masculinity is increasingly being redefined to include a wider range of traits and behaviors, such as empathy, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence. This shift is driven in part by the changing expectations of modern relationships and family structures, as well as a greater awareness of the negative effects of toxic masculinity on both individuals and society as a whole.
Masculinity from a gay man's perspective can often be a nuanced and complex issue. Society has historically placed strict expectations on what it means to be masculine, and for many gay men, these expectations can be at odds with their own experiences and identities. Growing up, many gay men may have felt pressure to conform to traditional norms of masculinity, leading to feelings of shame and discomfort with their own masculinity. However, the gay community has also created its own unique cultural representations and expressions of masculinity. From the "bear" and "twink" subcultures to the celebration of drag and gender performance, gay men have reclaimed and redefined masculinity in their own way. This can be seen as a form of resistance against the rigid expectations of traditional masculinity and a celebration of individual self-expression.
